Defying Gravity

Nothing moves me like a musical! The music. The costumes. The characters.

The story.

Most times a musical takes me on an adventure. Sometimes, if I’m lucky, it’s where God opens my eyes and pours his truth into my life.

There are a few musicals where God used the music and story to minister to my heart. Man of La Mancha, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,  Memphis, and Wicked.

It’s the last one, the backstory of the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz, that helped me move past my disappointments and made me push one last time toward my dreams. It helped me hope again when I had none. It helped me take a leap of faith one more time and gave me the courage to try again no matter the outcome or what others said.

I saw myself in Elphaba’s struggle. Wanting so desperately to be more than what people saw her as, she fought for what she wanted despite opposition, then realized it could never be as she dreamed.

It could be better!

I see myself in Elphaba’s hopes and disappointments. And I understood when she realized if she wanted to live her dreams, she couldn’t wait for them to happen or for people to approve, she needed to make them come true or die trying. She needed to do the thing people thought she could never do. She needed to try to defy gravity.

Every time I dream beyond myself and move toward making the impossible happen, I’m defying gravity. That’s what my new focus is on. Not about the struggles on the way toward the goal, but about giving my hopes and dreams one last push. Then pushing again when I fail. And doing it over and over and over again.

It’s about trying to defy gravity.

Whatever your dream…to be a published writer, lose that stubborn weight, or have the family and life you’ve always imagined, are you ready to give it one last push…every day?

Whether you’re ready to take YOUR leap of faith, I hope you’ll find encouragement and motivation here!

“Something has changed within me, something is not the same
I’m through with playing by the rules of someone else’s game
Too late for second guessing, too late to go back to sleep
It’s time to trust my instincts, close my eyes and leap

It’s time to try defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I’m defying gravity
And you can’t bring me down

I’m through accepting limits cause someone says they’re so
Some things I cannot change but til I try I’ll never know
Too long I’ve been afraid of losing love I guess I’ve lost
Well if that’s love it comes at much too high a cost

I’d sooner buy defying gravity
I’m way up high, I’m defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I’m defying gravity
And you won’t bring me down

My future is unlimited
And I just had a vision
Almost like a prophecy
I know
It sounds truly crazy
And, true, the vision’s hazy
But I can see it
I can feel it
I swear I’ll be so high

So if you care to find me look to the western sky
As someone told me lately everyone deserves a chance to fly
And if I’m flying solo at least I’m flying free
To those who ground me take a message back from me

It’s time to try defying gravity
I’m way up high, I’m defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye, I’m defying gravity
And you won’t bring me
You won’t bring me down
